Once upon a time, there was a gentle girl named Tam who lived with her cruel stepmother and a lazy half-sister named Cam. They made Tam do all the hard work while they rested. One day, Tam caught a basket full of shrimp, but Cam tricked her and stole them all. Buddha appeared and gave Tam a small goby fish to raise as a friend.
When a royal festival arrived, the stepmother mixed rice and husks together to stop Tam from going. However, Buddha sent sparrows to help her. He gave her beautiful clothes and a pair of embroidered slippers. Tam dropped one slipper at the festival, and the King found it. He declared he would marry whoever the slipper fitted. It fitted Tam perfectly, and she became the Queen.
The jealous stepmother and Cam killed Tam to take her place. But Tam's spirit did not die. She went through many reincarnations: first as a Golden Oriole bird, then two peach trees, then a loom. Each time, Cam destroyed her, but Tam always returned to warn them.
Finally, Tam hid inside a fragrant "Thi" fruit. An old woman brought the fruit home. When the old woman was away, Tam came out to do the housework. One day, the King visited and saw a plate of betel prepared in a special shape—like Phoenix wings. He recognized his wife's skill. Tam stepped out, and they were happily reunited. The wicked stepmother and Cam were punished for their evil deeds.
Karma & Reincarnation (Luân hồi & Nhân quả): Unlike Cinderella, Tam doesn't just wait for rescue. She actively fights for her life through multiple reincarnations (bird, tree, loom). This reflects the belief that the soul is immortal and good will always defeat evil.
Betel and Areca (Trầu Cau): The King recognizes Tam through the specific way she prepares betel ("Phoenix wings" style), showing that true love pays attention to small details.
