King An Duong Vuong built the spiral citadel of Co Loa to protect his country. The Golden Turtle God gave him a magic claw to make a crossbow. One shot from this weapon could kill thousands of invaders. Because of this, the country was at peace.
The enemy general, Trieu Da, could not defeat the King, so he devised a cunning plan. He proposed a marriage between his son, Trong Thuy, and the King's daughter, Princess My Chau. The King agreed, allowing Trong Thuy to live in the citadel as a spy.
My Chau loved her husband dearly and trusted him completely. One day, Trong Thuy tricked her into showing him the magic crossbow. He secretly swapped the magic trigger with a fake one. He then told My Chau he had to visit his father. Before leaving, he asked: "If war breaks out, how can I find you?" My Chau said: "I will drop goose feathers from my coat to leave a trail."
Soon, Trieu Da attacked. The King used the crossbow, but it did not work. The citadel fell. The King fled with My Chau on horseback, fleeing towards the sea. Trong Thuy followed the feather trail to chase them.
At the seaside, the Golden Turtle appeared and shouted: "The enemy is sitting right behind you!" The King realized the betrayal. In pain and anger, he drew his sword and beheaded his daughter, then walked into the sea. My Chau's blood turned into pearls. Trong Thuy arrived and wept over his wife's body. Later, filled with regret, he committed suicide by jumping into a well.
