Mai An Tiem was a clever and hardworking young man. King Hung adopted him as a son because of his talent. However, Tiem was also very proud and independent. When jealous officials accused him of being arrogant, he famously said: "Gifts are worries, what is given is a debt. My wealth comes from my own two hands."
The King was furious and decided to test him. He exiled Tiem and his family to a deserted island far away, with only a few tools and some food. Life was hard, but Tiem did not lose hope. He built a shelter and looked for ways to survive.
One day, Tiem saw a raven drop some black seeds on the sand. Thinking that "if birds can eat it, people can eat it too," he decided to plant them. He carefully cultivated the land. Soon, green vines covered the beach, producing large, green fruits.
When he cut one open, the inside was bright red, juicy, and sweet. It helped quench their thirst under the hot sun. He called it "watermelon." Tiem carved his name on the fruits and let them float on the sea.
Traders passing by found the strange delicious fruits floating in the water. They traced them back to the island and began trading goods for the watermelons. Tiem became wealthy again through his own labor. Hearing this, the King realized his mistake and the value of self-reliance. He welcomed Tiem back to the court.
