Long ago, there were two very close friends who lived next to each other in a small village. One was named Cuoc. They were inseparable, working together in the fields and sharing every meal. Their friendship was known throughout the region.
One year, a severe famine struck the land. Food became scarce, and life became incredibly hard. To survive, the two friends decided they must temporarily separate to find work in different towns. Before leaving, they promised to reunite at home when the famine ended.
Cuoc stayed behind to guard their homes, while his friend traveled far away. Cuoc waited patiently. Days turned into months, and months turned into years. The famine ended, and the harvest returned, but his friend did not come back. Worried and lonely, Cuoc decided to set out to search for him.
He walked through deep forests and crossed wide rivers, calling his friend's name endlessly. He walked until his legs were tired and his body was exhausted. Finally, he collapsed in a thicket of bushes.
Even in death, his spirit could not rest. He transformed into a bird with black feathers and a long beak. The bird continued to call "Cuoc! Cuoc!" day and night. Its mournful cry echoed across the fields every summer, a symbol of eternal loyalty and the pain of waiting.
