Once upon a time, there were two brothers named Tan and Lang. They were twins who resembled each other closely and loved each other very much. When Tan got married, he spent all his time with his wife. Lang felt lonely and sad, believing his brother no longer cared for him.
One day, Lang left home. He walked until he was exhausted. He sat by a river, cried, died, and turned into a white limestone rock.
Tan went to look for his brother. When he found the rock, he sat beside it and cried until he turned into a straight Areca tree standing next to the limestone.
Tan's wife went to find her husband. She leaned against the tree and wept until she turned into a Betel vine wrapped around the trunk.
Years later, people discovered that chewing the betel leaf, the areca nut, and a bit of lime together creates a warm feeling and a bright red juice. This red color symbolizes loyalty and eternal love, becoming an essential part of Vietnamese weddings.
Symbol of Love (Biểu tượng tình yêu): The combination of Areca (Husband), Betel (Wife), and Lime (Brother) creates a red color, symbolizing blood ties and family loyalty.
Customs (Phong tục): "The betel leaf begins the conversation." Betel and Areca are mandatory gifts in engagement ceremonies and weddings in Vietnam.
