Once upon a time, in Nam Mau village, people were holding a great Buddhist festival. Suddenly, an old beggar woman appeared. She was dirty, smelled bad, and looked like a leper. She begged for food, but everyone shunned her, afraid of catching a disease.
Only a poor widow and her son felt pity for her. They brought the old woman home, gave her food, and let her sleep in their barn. That night, the widow saw a strange light. The old woman had transformed into a giant Dragon (Giao Long), shining in the dark. The widow was terrified but stayed silent.
The next morning, the Dragon was gone, and the old woman returned. Before leaving, she told the widow: "This region will soon face a terrible disaster. A flood will come. Take these two rice husks and this packet of ash." She instructed them to sprinkle the ash around their house to protect it.
That night, a great flood erupted while the villagers were celebrating. Water gushed out from the ground. People panicked and ran. However, the widow's house remained dry and rose higher with the water. Remembering the old woman, the widow threw the rice husks into the water. They instantly turned into two boats.
The widow and her son used the boats to rescue many drowning villagers. The submerged village became a large lake, now known as Ba Be Lake (Three Lakes). The widow's house, which never sank, became a small island in the middle of the lake, called "Widow's Island" (Po Gia Mai).
