In the 16th century, during a time of chaos, there lived a young man named Chom (later King Le Trang Tong). He came from a royal family but had to live in poverty among the common people to hide his identity. Because he had no money, he constantly had to eat and drink on credit at local stalls.
Strangely, Chom had a special kind of luck. Whenever he ate at a shop, that shop would suddenly become very busy and sell out its goods. Because of this, shopkeepers were happy to let him owe them money, hoping his presence would bring them fortune.
Over time, Chom's debt accumulated into a massive amount. He owed money to almost everyone in the area. He always promised: "When I become successful, I will repay you all."
Later, the old generals found him and restored him to the throne. When the new King returned to the capital city of Thang Long, his old creditors recognized him. They swarmed around his palanquin, pointing and demanding payment. The crowd was so huge it blocked the road.
The King could not calculate exactly how much he owed each person. He ordered his soldiers to scatter coins on the street for the people to pick up as payment. To stop the chaos, he ordered a sign to be put up that said "Forbidden to Point" (Cam Chi). That street is still called "Cam Chi" alley in Hanoi today. The phrase "Debt like Lord Chom" became a famous idiom for having endless debts.
The Idiom (Thành ngữ): "No nhu Chua Chom" (Debt like Lord Chom) is used to describe someone who has a huge amount of debt and owes money to many different people.
