Once upon a time, an old couple who were childless prayed for a baby. One day, the wife felt thirsty in the forest and drank water from a dried coconut shell. She later gave birth to a strange round lump of flesh with no arms or legs. They loved him anyway and named him So Dua (Coconut Shell).
As So Dua grew up, he wanted to help his mother. He asked to work for a rich landlord herding cattle. Surprisingly, the cows he cared for became fat and healthy. The landlord had three daughters who took turns bringing him rice. The two older sisters were arrogant and mean, but the youngest was kind-hearted.
One day, the youngest sister heard flute music. She peeked and saw So Dua transform into a handsome man. She fell in love with his inner beauty. When So Dua asked his mother to propose marriage, the landlord demanded expensive wedding gifts to mock him. However, So Dua provided everything and married the youngest daughter.
So Dua studied hard and became a high-ranking mandarin. Before leaving for a mission, he gave his wife a flintstone, a knife, and two eggs. While he was away, the jealous older sisters pushed his wife into the ocean. She survived on an island using the items her husband gave her.
The eggs hatched into a rooster and a hen. One day, the rooster saw a boat and crowed to call for help. It was So Dua's boat! The couple had a happy reunion. When they returned home, the two older sisters felt so ashamed that they fled away forever.
Inner Beauty (Vẻ đẹp tâm hồn): The story teaches us not to judge a book by its cover. Sọ Dừa's ugly appearance hid a talented and handsome man inside.
Virtue Rewarded (Ở hiền gặp lành): The youngest daughter's kindness was rewarded with happiness, while the jealous sisters faced shame. This reflects the Vietnamese belief in Karma.
