Thach Sanh was a brave orphan who lived under an ancient banyan tree. He was a humble woodcutter with incredible strength. One day, he met Ly Thong, a cunning wine seller. Ly Thong saw Thach Sanh's strength and tricked him into becoming sworn brothers to exploit him.
A cruel Ogre demanded a yearly human sacrifice. When it was Ly Thong's turn, he tricked Thach Sanh into guarding the temple in his place. Thach Sanh fought bravely and killed the Ogre with his axe. Ly Thong deceived him again, claiming the Ogre was the King's pet and urged him to flee. Ly Thong then took the credit and became a general.
Later, a giant eagle kidnapped the Princess. Thach Sanh tracked it to a deep cave and rescued her. However, Ly Thong betrayed him again by blocking the cave entrance with rocks, leaving Thach Sanh trapped.
In the cave, Thach Sanh saved the Sea King's son and was given a magical lute. Later, falsely imprisoned in a dungeon, he played the lute. The melancholy music cured the Princess's muteness. The King summoned him, and his innocence was revealed. The wicked Ly Thong was punished.
When invaders from 18 countries attacked, Thach Sanh played his lute, making the soldiers homesick and give up. He then used a small magic rice pot to feed the entire army, proving his generosity and bringing peace.
