Long ago, in the magical land of Linh Nam, there lived a mighty god named Lac Long Quan. He was the Dragon Lord of the Sea, with powers to control water and wind. One day, while visiting the high mountains, he met a beautiful fairy named Au Co. She was the daughter of the Bird King and loved the peaceful forests. They fell in love and married, bringing together the ocean and the mountains.
Soon, Au Co gave birth to a magical sac. Unlike normal babies, this bag contained one hundred eggs. Days later, the eggs hatched into one hundred strong sons. These children grew up quickly and were as powerful as their father and as beautiful as their mother. They were the ancestors of the Vietnamese people.
However, Lac Long Quan was a dragon who belonged to the sea, and Au Co was a fairy who belonged to the mountains. Lac Long Quan missed his underwater palace. He said to his wife, "My dear, I am from the water, and you are from the fire. Our natures are different. We cannot stay together forever."
They decided to separate to keep peace in the land. "I will take fifty sons to the sea," said the Dragon Lord. "You take fifty sons to the mountains."
Au Co agreed. The eldest son followed his mother to the land of Phong Chau and became the first Hung King. He named the country Van Lang. This story explains the origin of the Vietnamese people, who proudly call themselves "Children of the Dragon and the Fairy."
