Once upon a time, there were two brothers who lost their parents. They decided to divide their inheritance. The older brother was very greedy and took all the expensive land and cows. He left his younger brother only a small hut and a starfruit tree.
The younger brother was kind and hardworking. He took good care of the tree. One day, a giant raven came to eat the ripe fruit. The younger brother begged: "Please don't eat my fruit, it is my only fortune." The bird suddenly spoke: "Eating a fruit, I pay back with gold. Sew a three-span bag to carry it."
The next day, the raven flew the younger brother to a magical island full of gold. He filled his small bag just enough and flew home. He became very wealthy and helped the poor villagers. The older brother became jealous and asked to trade all his fortune for the starfruit tree. The kind younger brother agreed.
When the bird came, the greedy brother also demanded gold. However, he sewed a massive twelve-span bag. On the island, he stuffed the bag and his pockets with heavy gold. On the way back, the burden was too heavy. The exhausted bird tilted its wings. The greedy brother fell into the deep sea and was never seen again.
Tri Tuc (Biết đủ): The story teaches the concept of "knowing when is enough." The younger brother was content with the three-span bag, while the older brother's greed led to his doom.
Karma: "Eating a fruit, paying with gold" reminds us that nature rewards those who are kind, but punishes those who take too much.
