In the 15th century, the Ming invaders from the North occupied our country. A local leader named Le Loi led a rebellion, but in the beginning, his army was weak and often faced many difficulties.
To help him save the nation, the Dragon Lord decided to lend him a magical sword. One day, a fisherman named Le Than found a heavy iron blade in his net three times. He brought it to Le Loi. Later, Le Loi found a glowing hilt in the forest.
When he put them together, they fitted perfectly. Two words appeared on the blade: "Thuan Thien" (Will of Heaven). With this sword, Le Loi's army grew in strength and courage. They defeated the enemy and won back independence for Vietnam.
One year later, King Le Loi was boating on Green Water Lake in the capital. Suddenly, a giant Golden Turtle surfaced. It spoke: "Please return the sword to the Dragon Lord." The King threw the sword, and the turtle caught it and dove down. Since then, the lake has been renamed Hoan Kiem Lake (Lake of the Returned Sword), a symbol of peace.
War and Peace (Chiến tranh và Hòa bình): The action of returning the sword represents the desire for peace. The sword is for protecting the country, but when the war is over, weapons should be put away to focus on building the nation.
The Turtle (Rùa): In Vietnamese culture, the turtle is one of the four sacred animals (Dragon, Unicorn, Turtle, Phoenix), symbolizing longevity and wisdom.
