Once upon a time, there was a young couple who lived by the coast. The husband was a fisherman, and his wife stayed at home. They loved each other deeply and were inseparable. One day, the husband had to go on a long voyage to the open sea. He promised to return before the monsoon season.
The wife waited patiently on the shore every day. However, a terrible storm struck the ocean. Days turned into weeks, but there was no sign of his boat. Filled with anxiety and love, the wife decided to set out to find him. She walked along the endless beach, calling his name until her voice became hoarse.
Exhausted and heartbroken, she finally collapsed and died by the water's edge. Her spirit transformed into a sea creature with a hard shell to protect herself from the waves—the female horseshoe crab (Sam).
Meanwhile, the husband had survived the storm but was shipwrecked on a deserted island. When he finally built a raft and returned home, he found his house empty. Learning of his wife's fate, he was overwhelmed with grief. He threw himself into the sea to be with her.
He turned into a smaller horseshoe crab (often called So). He found his wife in the ocean. Since then, the two are always seen together. The male clings tightly to the female's back, and they swim as a pair, never to be separated again. This is why people say they are "stuck like Sam."
"Dính như Sam" (Stuck like Sam): This is a common Vietnamese idiom used to describe couples or close friends who are always together and inseparable.
Faithfulness (Sự Thủy Chung): The story honors the eternal bond of marriage. Even death could not separate the couple; instead, it transformed them into creatures that remain together forever.
"Dính như Sam": Đây là một thành ngữ phổ biến của Việt Nam dùng để chỉ những cặp đôi hoặc đôi bạn thân thiết lúc nào cũng có nhau, không thể tách rời.
Sự Thủy Chung: Câu chuyện tôn vinh sự gắn kết vĩnh cửu của hôn nhân. Ngay cả cái chết cũng không thể chia lìa đôi vợ chồng; trái lại, nó biến họ thành loài vật bên nhau mãi mãi.
