Long ago, there was a woman named Thi Nhi who was married to Trong Cao. Due to many arguments, they separated, and she married another man named Pham Lang. Years later, Trong Cao lost all his money and became a beggar. One day, he knocked on Thi Nhi's door asking for food.
She recognized her former husband and felt pity, so she fed him. Suddenly, Pham Lang returned home. Afraid of being misunderstood, Thi Nhi hid Trong Cao in a stack of straw in the garden. Unknowingly, Pham Lang set fire to the straw to create fertilizer for the fields.
Trong Cao did not run out because he wanted to protect Thi Nhi's honor, so he died in the fire. Thi Nhi, seeing this tragedy, jumped into the flames to die with him. Pham Lang, seeing his wife die, jumped in as well.

On the 23rd day of the last lunar month, the Kitchen Gods ride carps to fly to Heaven. They report the family's good and bad deeds to the Emperor. People often release live carps on this day to say farewell to them.
