Once upon a time, there was a poor but honest peasant named Khoai. He worked for a wealthy and greedy landlord. The landlord promised: "Work hard for me for three years, and I will let you marry my daughter."
Khoai worked tirelessly, day and night. However, when the time came, the landlord deceived him. He planned to marry his daughter to a rich man instead. To trick Khoai again, the landlord set an impossible task: "Go into the forest and find a bamboo tree with one hundred knots. Only then can you marry her."
Khoai searched the entire forest but could only find normal bamboo. He sat down and cried in despair. Suddenly, Buddha appeared as an old man and told him to gather one hundred separate bamboo joints. He taught Khoai a magic spell: "Khac nhap, Khac nhap!" (Stick together!). Instantly, the joints joined into a single hundred-knot tree. To separate them, he said: "Khac xuat, Khac xuat!" (Fall apart!).
Khoai returned home just as the landlord was holding a wedding feast for the rich man. The landlord laughed at Khoai's pile of bamboo. Khoai quietly muttered the incantation. The bamboo stuck together instantly. When the landlord tried to touch it, he got stuck to the tree! The rich suitor tried to help and got stuck too.
Terrified, the landlord begged for forgiveness and agreed to keep his promise. Khoai said the second spell to detach them. Khoai married the landlord's daughter and they lived happily ever after.
