In the ancient days, all birds had plain white feathers. The Crow and the Peacock were very close friends. One day, they found a set of dyes with many beautiful colors. They decided to paint each other to become more beautiful.
The Crow painted the Peacock first. He was a talented artist and worked with great patience. He drew colorful circles like coins and moons on the Peacock's tail. He carefully added shades of green, blue, and gold. After many hours, the Peacock looked magnificent and splendid.
Then, it was the Peacock's turn to paint the Crow. However, the Crow was very gluttonous. Suddenly, he heard the sound of a feast nearby. He could smell the food and became extremely impatient. He wanted to go eat immediately.
The Peacock tried to paint carefully, but the Crow shouted: "Hurry up! I'm hungry! Just pour the ink on me!" The Peacock advised him to wait, but the Crow grabbed a pot of black ink and poured it all over his body.
The Crow became completely black from head to toe. He flew away to eat, not caring about his looks. Later, seeing how ugly he was compared to the beautiful Peacock, he felt ashamed and jealous. That is why the Peacock is colorful and the Crow is black, crying "Qua! Qua!" (Greed! Greed!) in regret.
Haste makes waste (Dục tốc bất đạt): The story teaches that patience and care lead to beauty and success (the Peacock), while haste and greed lead to ugly results (the Crow).
Origin Story: This legend explains the physical characteristics of the birds. The Crow's cry "Qua! Qua!" sounds like a complaint of regret for its own greed.
