When King Hung the Sixth was old, he wanted to choose an heir to the throne. He gathered all his sons and announced a competition: "Whoever brings me the most meaningful food to worship our ancestors will become the new King."
Most of the princes traveled far to find expensive and exotic dishes from the sea and the forest. However, the eighteenth prince, Lang Lieu, was very poor. He lost his mother when he was young and spent his life working in the fields.
One night, a deity appeared in his dream and said: "Nothing is as precious as rice, for it feeds all people. You should use sticky rice to make cakes." Following this advice, Lang Lieu selected the best grains.
He used green leaves to wrap the rice into a square cake called Banh Chung, representing the Earth, filled with mung beans and pork. He also made a round white cake called Banh Giay, representing the Sky.
The King was impressed by the delicious taste and the deep meaning of the cakes. They showed respect for agriculture and the toil of farmers. Lang Lieu inherited the throne, and these cakes became a tradition during the Lunar New Year.
