Once upon a time, there were five blind fortune tellers. Since they were blind, they had never seen an elephant before. One day, hearing that an elephant was passing by the village, they decided to pay the owner some money to let them touch the animal to know its shape.
The first man touched the trunk and said: "Wow! The elephant is wriggling like a leech."
The second man touched the tusk and disagreed: "No, no! It is hard and long like a ploughshare."
The third man touched the large ear and laughed: "You are both wrong. It is flat and wide like a winnowing fan."
The fourth man hugged the leg and argued: "Nonsense! It stands tall and sturdy like a pillar in a communal house."
The fifth man touched the tail and shouted: "Everyone is stupid! The elephant is scraggy like an old broom."
The five men argued loudly. Each person insisted he was right and the others were wrong. They became so furious that they began to hit each other, causing a big fight until they were bleeding. In the end, they still did not know the truth because they only saw a partial part of the whole.
Idiom (Thành ngữ): "Thay boi xem voi" is used to mock people who look at things partially but claim to understand the whole picture (subjective view).
Moral (Bài học): To understand the truth, we must look at the whole picture, not just one side. Arguing without full knowledge leads to foolish conflict.
