In 19th century Vietnam, there were two famous scholars named Ba Giai and Tu Xuat. They were known as a clever duo of pranksters who loved to use their intelligence to help the poor and tease the greedy.
One day, a poor woman came to them crying. She said: "I worked for a rich landlord for a year, but he is so stingy that he refused to pay my wages. I am desperate." Ba Giai smiled and said: "Don't worry, we will devise a plan to get your money back."
The next day, Ba Giai and Tu Xuat went to the landlord's house. Tu Xuat put on a disguise, acting like a madman. He ran into the courtyard, dancing wildly and screaming nonsense, creating total chaos during a party the landlord was holding. The guests were annoyed, and the landlord was furious.
Ba Giai stepped forward, pretending to be a doctor. He told the landlord: "This man is crazy, but he listens to his debts. If you owe anyone money, pay them, and he will calm down." The landlord, afraid of losing his reputation in front of his guests, remembered the poor woman's unpaid wage.
Finding the madman too annoying to handle, the landlord reluctantly gave Ba Giai the money to pay the "ghosts" of his debts. Ba Giai took the money and immediately gave it to the poor woman. Tu Xuat stopped dancing instantly. The duo left laughing, having used their wit to bring justice to the poor.
The Duo (Cặp Bài Trùng): Ba Giai and Tu Xuat were real historical figures who became legends in Hanoi folklore. They represent the intellectual class fighting against corruption and oppression using humor instead of violence.
Satire (Châm Biếm): Their stories are satirical attacks on the bad habits of the rich and powerful in the feudal/colonial society of Northern Vietnam.
